Making homemade burgers is fun and relatively easy. On the other hand, knowing the exact amount of meat you need for a certain number of burgers can be quite the challenge! To help you save some time, I bought a pound of meat to see how many burgers (of different sizes) I'd get out of it. Together with the additional ingredients used in hamburger recipes, one pound of ground beef typically yields either five 4-ounce diner-sized hamburgers, four pub-sized 5-ounce burgers, or about twelve 1 1/2-2-ounce mini burgers. How Much Does A Hamburger Patty Weigh? The first thing to address is the size of a regular hamburger patty. Most diner hamburgers have an approximate diameter of 3 1/2 inches and a weight of about 4 ounces. Most pub-sized burgers have a diameter of about 4 to 4 1/2 inches and an approximate weight of 5 to 6 ounces. The average size of a slider or mini hamburger patty is 2 inches in diameter and about 1 1/2 to 2 ounces in weight. This information will help determine the number of burgers you can get out of one pound of meat or how much meat you'll need for a certain number of hamburgers. Let's get right to it! How Many Burgers Do You Get From One Pound of Ground Beef? Five 4-ounce burger patties Okay, so for this article, I literally checked the diameter and weight of my burger patties! They measured exactly 3 1/2 inches and weighed just under 4 ounces. And while that sounds silly, it actually helped make this article more helpful. Why not go the extra mile, right? By doing so, and by doing some extensive research online, I found out that you can get 5 burgers out of 1 pound of ground beef, not four, as many sources online will tell you! True, 1 pound equals 16 ounces, and if you're planning on making regular-sized burgers, meaning the ones that weigh around 4 ounces, logically, you should end up with four patties, right? The thing is, though, that your burgers don't just consist of the ground beef itself! Most recipes (mine, which you can find further down in this recipe, included) also contain 1 egg and about 1/2 a cup of dry breadcrumbs. The average weight of an egg is 1 3/4 to 2 ounces, and half a cup of breadcrumbs have an approximate weight of 2 ounces as well. If you add those two ingredients to your 16 ounces of meat, you'll end up with a mixture that weighs more or less 20 ounces. And so, 20 ounces of meat / 4 ounces per burger patty = 5 hamburgers! On the other hand, if you're planning on making bigger pub-sized burgers (the ones weighing 5 to 6 ounces), you will, indeed, end up with about four hamburgers! Most recipes are, however, based on commonly-sized burger patties (meaning those weighing around 4 ounces). How Many Mini Burgers Does One Pound of Ground Beef Make? Twelve 1 3/4-ounce mini hamburger patties I love making mini hamburgers for my kiddos, so I also included those in the article. Given that one mini burger patty has an average weight of 1 1/2 to 2 ounces, one pound of ground beef would equal about 10 to 12 mini hamburgers. I only checked the weight of the first patty I made and then used that as a reference for the rest. As you can see in the picture, I ended up with 12 more or less equally-sized mini burgers. How Much Meat Do You Need for 10 Burgers? Once again, we assume that your hamburger patties weigh 4 or 6 ounces each. 10 diner-sized burgers with a weight per patty of 4 ounces would have a total weight of 40 ounces or 2 1/2 pounds. But those 2 1/2 pounds include more than just the ground beef. (Remember the eggs and breadcrumbs!) Instead, these 2 1/2 pounds equal the ready mixture! So, given that there will be 2 eggs (4 ounces) and 1 cup of dry breadcrumbs (4 ounces) in your mix, all you need for those 10 regular-sized burgers is 32 ounces or 2 pounds of meat. That's one entire pound of meat less than you thought you'd need! However, if you're going for the bigger burgers (with a weight of about 6 ounces), you'll need 60 ounces or 3 3/4 pounds of the burger mixture. Once again, after subtracting the weight of 3 eggs (6 ounces) and 1 1/2 cups of breadcrumbs (6 ounces), the amount of meat you'll need for those 10 pub-sized hamburgers is 48 ounces or 3 pounds! How Much Ground Beef Do You Need for 20 Burgers? If you want to make 20 hamburgers, all you have to do is double the amount of ingredients and meat you need to make 10 burgers. This means you'd need 4 eggs, 2 cups of dry breadcrumbs, and 4 pounds of ground beef to make 20 diner-sized burger (4 ounces) patties. You'd have to do the same thing for 20 pub-sized burgers (6 ounces)! For 20 6-ounce burger patties, you will need 6 eggs, 3 cups of dry breadcrumbs, and 6 pounds of ground beef. How to Make a Simple Hamburger? Simple Burger Recipe Yield: 5 (4-ounce) , 4 (5-6-ounce), or 12 mini burgers Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 12 minutes Total Time: 22 minutes This is an easy-to-make and delicious burger recipe that doesn't take more than roughly 20 minutes of your time. It includes only a few basic ingredients but makes for some mouth-watering hamburgers! Print Ingredients 1lb of ground beef (at least 10% fat for a richer flavor) 1 egg 1/4 - 1/2 cup dry breadcrumbs 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp black pepper 1/4 garlic powder (optional) Instructions Add egg, salt, pepper, and garlic powder to a large bowl and mix together with a whisk or fork.Add the ground beef and mix together well with your hands or a fork.Add the dried breadcrumbs and mix until you get a lean meat ball. Now form the meat into 5 diner-sized (4 ounces), 4 pub-sized (5-6 ounces), or 12 mini burgers (1 3/4-2 ounces). You can use a scale to weigh your patties. This way, they will have the same size.Fry or grill your burger patties for about 12 minutes (6 minutes per side). Add your favorite toppings and dressings. Notes If you use ground beef with more than 10% fat, you don't need any frying oil or butter, as the fat in the meat will be enough. I love to fry my patties in butter for beef with a maximum fat content of 10%. It gives the burgers an exceptional flavor!The garlic powder is a secret ingredient of mine. I love the taste of garlic, and it works really well for this basic burger recipe.As far as toppings go, there are no limits! You can add cheese and/or bacon slices, tomatoes, onions, pickled cucumber, lettuce, and so forth. Just add what you like to have love.My kids especially love the mini burgers. They are a popular pick for birthdays and other festivities. I like my burgers medium-well, which is why I will fry or grill them for about 12 minutes. The approximate cooking time for well-done burgers is 14-15 minutes and 8-10 minutes for medium-rare to medium ones. Although this will depend on your oven's or grill's heat!
